MOUNT CLEMENS, MI - The Chicago Crush Premier battled through a rollercoaster weekend at the Detroit Showcase, posting a 2-1-1 record in a four-game marathon that showcased both the team's explosive potential and areas for improvement.
Chicago Crush Opening Night Statement
The red, white, and blue came out flying in their showcase opener, absolutely lighting up the Kingston Wranglers in an 11-1 barn burner. William Kenny was an absolute force, putting up a four-point night (2G, 2A) while the dynamic duo of Peter White and Keith Watkins each notched three points. The Crush's special teams were clicking on all cylinders, with the power play converting at a clinical rate and the PK unit even chipping in with Jacob Rozanski's shorty late in the third.
Reality Check
The hockey gods have a way of keeping teams honest, and the Toledo Cherokee delivered that message with authority in a 7-0 shutout. Despite some early back-and-forth play, the Cherokee showed why they're a powerhouse, utilizing their lethal transition game and special teams prowess to take control. The Crush's normally potent offense was stymied by Caleb Kril, who stood on his head between the pipes for Toledo.
Showing Some Heart
If there's one thing Coach Steve Maltais has instilled in this squad, it's resilience. The Crush showed plenty of character in their bounce-back effort against Fresh Coast Freeze, gutting out a 3-2 overtime victory. Juan Aguilar was a brick wall between the pipes, and Mac King played hero with a beautiful goal in the extra frame on the power play. The victory showcased the team's mental toughness, especially coming off the tough morning loss to the Toledo Cherokee.
Heartbreaker in the Finale
The showcase finale against Somang Hockey had all the makings of a classic, with the teams trading punches in a tight-checking affair that needed extra time to decide. Despite Mac King striking early and Peter White showing his clutch gene with the third-period equalizer, Somang's Donovan Odige played spoiler in overtime. Patrick Johansen deserved a better fate, standing tall with 28 saves in the losing effort.
The Bottom Line
The Crush's 2-1-1 showcase performance keeps them in the thick of things with their 8-3-2-1 overall record. The weekend highlighted both the team's explosive potential – as seen in the Kingston game – and areas needing attention, particularly special teams discipline and consistency against top-tier opponents.
"We showed flashes of brilliance and moments where we need to tighten up," noted Coach Maltais. "These showcases are perfect measuring sticks for where we stand and what we need to work on heading into the stretch run."
The Crush's depth was on full display throughout the weekend, with contributions coming from all four lines. Kenny, White, and King continue to be offensive catalysts, while the goaltending trio of Johansen, Janicina, and Aguilar proved they can steal games when called upon.
As the team heads back to the Windy City, there's plenty to build on – and a few things to shore up – as they look to make noise in the Midwest Division playoff race.
